Locus iste celebrates two milestones for the Choir of St Johnís College, Cambridge: as well as 2019 marking the 150th anniversary of the consecration of the college chapel, this release is coincidentally the choirís 100th recording Ė 60 years on from George Guestís iconic first recording of ĎHear my prayerí for Argo, released in 1959.

Directed by Andrew Nethsingha, the programme makes great use of the chapelís renowned acoustic, and celebrates the choirs past, present and future Ė including an anthem by a former director of music, a motet by one of their recent student composers and the cello-playing of a current undergraduate.

The Choir of St Johnís College, Cambridge is one of the finest collegiate choirs in the world Ė known and loved by millions from its broadcasts, concert tours and recordings. Founded in the 1670s, the Choir is known for its rich, warm and distinctive sound, its expressive interpretations and its ability to sing in a variety of styles.

As the title suggests, the latest recording from St Johnís College, Cambridge, is all about the spirit of place. This 100th recording from the choir marks the 150th anniversary of the consecration of the collegeís glorious Gilbert Scott chapel in 1869 Ė the same year, incidentally, that gave us Brucknerís title-track. The motet sets the theme for a sequence of works each chosen to represent a decade in the choirís history, with many also sharing more tangible, personal links to the college.  Alexander Coghlan
