About

Rearranging Rossini’s music scored for orchestra for just one instrument involves selecting the most important elements, analysing the components that cannot be left aside such as colour, themes and aspects of style, like the vivacity and “rhythm” of Rossini’s music, and the calculated balance of apparently conflicting elements.

On this CD, a perfect imitation of the orchestra has not been attempted, but the natural characterics of the organ have been used to best advantage, such as registers, sound attack and individual quality of colour, in the hope that this renders justice to Rossini’s scores.

The listener will hear sounds that recall drums and even a band, and registers, such as “Campanelli” (bells) (Tancredi), are used to render the light-hearted themes. The “Voce umana” (Gazza ladra) efficiently translates the successions of harmonic ritardi, and the registers other than “wind” (normally used by Rossini for the second theme) are used to express a wider variety of colour.
