About

This idea of this CD centres on Paul Patterson’s beautiful Concerto which was written for Raphael Wallfisch in 2002. The repertoire surrounding the Patterson was chosen to demonstrate the variety and richness of twentieth century works for cello and string orchestra lurking just outside the mainstream.

2007 marked Elizabeth Maconchy’s centenary. Her Epyllion is a large scale four-movement piece. It is dramatic and densely written but immediately accessible. Lutoslawski’s Metamorphoses is a fleeting piece that despite its length leaves the clear impression of being a significant work. Hindemith’s Trauermusik (originally written for viola) transfers very gratefully to the richer sonority of the cello. Finally, to lighten the atmosphere Mark Kopyman’s Kaddish celebrates a traditional Jewish ritual with passion and humour.

Raphael Wallfisch is one of the UK’s most recorded cellists. His list of works by British composers alone includes 21 concertos. Raphael believes this CD represents the best of his playing and celebrates his continuing enthusiasm for neglected repertoire.

This is a premiere recording of Paul Patterson's Concerto.
