About

Mendelssohn was a glowing admirer of the music of Bach, Mozart and Beethoven, and his creativity was lent additional inspiration whilst on honeymoon in Italy - it was in these sunny southern climes that Mendelssohn wrote his two piano concertos.

Elisabeth Leonskaya and the dazzling Salzburg Camerata under their young conductor Ilan Volkov offer pure listening pleasure on this live recording on SACD. The MDG microphones caught up with the interpreters on their European tour at the Konzerthaus, Vienna.

It was only in Venice that Mendelssohn could have composed his three “Venetian Gondola Songs”, and these songs without words form just the right encore on this disc.
