About

English tenor Charles Daniels’ selection of lute songs for this recording is proof that there were many Renaissance composers besides Dowland who could combine words and music to great effect. This collection of lute songs from the early 17th century includes gems by composers such as Thomas Campion, Thomas Morley (whose setting of Shakespeare’s It Was a Lover and his Lass from As You Like It, is included), William Corkine, Alfonso II Ferrabosco, Thomas Ford, Robert II Jones, and Francis Pilkington — composers who perfected the art of pairing text with emotional expressiveness.

The release of this recording co-incides with Daniels’ Montreal Baroque Festival engagement in the title role of Monteverdi’s Orfeo. Lutenist Nigel North has appeared on several ATMA recordings, including Le Secret des Muses, a CD of solo lute music by Nicolas Vallet.
