About

Bill Hawkes has played viola and violin with Michael Nyman, the Balanescu String Quartet, the Nigel Kennedy String Quartet, Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush - on this collection of works by Gavin Bryars, Alberto Iglesias and Nick Drake he's joined by pianist Shaun Lyon.

The North Shore was written to accompany an exhibition of paintings by James Hugonin, and Bill Hawkes gave the first performance with Nicolas Hodges in Edinburgh in 1993. It was inspired in part by Gavin Bryars's childhood holidays in Whitby, Yorkshire.

In Cambridge was written in 2021 for Bill Hawkes's parents' 60th Wedding Anniversary celebrations at Darwin College, Cambridge; it reflects their long residence in and connection to the city, and was a generous and much appreciated gift from Gavin Bryars.

Lacrimae for Juan was written in memory of the great sculptor, Juan Munoz, by his brother- in- law, Alberto Iglesias, following his sudden death in 2001. The piece was first played at a memorial for Juan that year in the Turbine Hall, Tate Modern, London by Bill Hawkes and Gavin Bryars. The cavernous reverberant acoustics of that space are re-evoked in this recording.

Horn, a guitar instrumental from Pink Moon, Nick Drake's final album released in1972, has seeming influences of Indian and African music. Opening with the original piece, Bill Hawkes explores these possibilities before returning to simplifying variations on the theme.
