About

The musicians of Project Boussu are comprised of Geerten Verberkmoes, Ann Cnop (violin), Shiho Ono (violin) and Mathilde Wolfs (cello) and collectively they perform the trio sonatas of Hendrik-Jacob de Croes, Pieter Van Maldere and Eugene Godecharle.

Geerten Verberkmoes is an instrument maker and researcher, currently focusing on the construction of and research into historical string instruments, specialising on the life and instruments of eighteenth-century violin maker Benoît-Joseph  Boussu.

The three trio sonatas on this new recording were composed during the 18th century, are performed here on period instruments and feature several premiere recordings. Van Maldere was born in Brussels and educated as a violinist and composer, probably by the directors of the Brussels court chapel, Jean-Joseph Fiocco and Henri-Jacques de Croes.

Godecharle was born in Brussels in 1742. His father, Jacques-Antoine Godecharle, was master of music in the church of St Nicholas, and bass singer at the court chapel of Prince Charles of Lorraine, governor of the Austrian Netherlands.

Reviews

[The works] are given excellent interpretations by these three fine players […]. They deliver lively performances of the fast movements and explore the expressive features of the slower movements. I hope for more recordings of neglected repertoire from this time and region.
