About

This is the second CD with works by Bernd Kuchenmeister, recorded in the Cistercian Abbey of Mariensta  (Rhineland-Palatinate) with the Kleine deutsche Messe in addition to the Missa Contemplatione.

Bernd Kuchenmeister’s motives for the composition of the Missa Contemplatione originated in a verbal “director’s instruction” of several pages by his father. The latter gave it to him with the request to write a large mass for him. Surprised by such a request, he started work on it but didn’t get beyond the Kyrie.

After the death of his father, he looked again at his verbal implementation proposals of a smaller mass: “I can no longer do it for you because you are no longer in this world.” But he absolutely wanted to fulfil his obligations as he continued to work. When working on the Kleine Messe that followed, he always had the feeling of being connected to him in a special way.

One of the guiding principles of the Cistercian order is contemplation, which can also be traced back to his important Saint Bernhard von Clairvaux. It therefore made sense to make the recording of this mass in a Cistercian abbey: the recording of the second CD by Bernd Kuchenmeister was carried out at the feet of the Ursula altar in the Marienstatt abbey, in which his first CD Symphonie Bach was already recorded.
