Phantasm

About

In this new recording Phantasm make no excuses for arranging some of Bach’s remarkable keyboard music for a consort of viols. Led by director Laurence Dreyfus they go on a conscious mission to uncover the hidden riches concealed behind the more neutral resources of the harpsichord and organ so as to liberate the fascinating characters lurking in the shadows and behind the scenes within Bach’s individual polyphonic lines. In the process of fugal confrontation among three to six musicians, they come face to face with the astounding psychological insights of Bach’s most radical inventions.

Drawn chiefly from the two books of the Well-Tempered Clavier, the Musical Offering and the Clavier-Übung III, the repertoire chosen for this recording has an uncanny way of forging Bach’s links with the old English traditions of the Fantasy and In nomine as much as leaping forward into a chromatic twelve-tone world where the raw emotions of expressionist modernism become not only audible but adventurously relevant. A second instalment of The Well-Tempered Consort is already planned.

Phantasm, an award-winning consort of viols, was founded in 1994 by Laurence Dreyfus and has become recognized as the most exciting viol consort active on the world scene today. The ensemble catapulted into international prominence when its debut recording won a 1997 Gramophone Award; it has since won two further Gramophone Awards in 2004 and in 2017. The ensemble was awarded a Diapason d’or de l’année for Dowland’s Lachrimae (2017) and a Diapason d’or for Byrd’s Complete Consort Music (2011).

Phantasm is Laurence Dreyfus, Emilia Benjamin, Jonathan Manson, Heidi Gröger, Markku Luolajan-Mikkola and guest Liam Byrne.

“Phantasm’s control is absolute. The playing is remarkable, and technically flawless.”
 – The Guardian

“Phantasm’s accomplished and expressive performances … allows new insights into Bach’s prodigious mind.” – Gramophone

Reviews

The consort sound is a balm of well-tempered, flowing sweetness, often heightened by judicious transpositions to maximise the instruments’ resonance, but at the fore is a playful sense of exploratioon into the chromatic corners and remote tonal areas originally intended to promote an otherworldly effect.  Hannah French (Chamber Choice)
BBC Music Magazine April 2020
