About

What if a wonderful surprise had been waiting for you for over two centuries in the Queen’s Petit Théâtre in the Petit Trianon? On 19 September 1780, Marie-Antoinette was on stage, in costume, performing with the Troupe du Seigneurs for a public of close friends she invited personally. That evening, she was the heroin of Le Devin du Village (The Village Soothsayer), an opera in one act by Jean-Jacques Rousseau (the philosopher, no less), the most famous work of its time. Come and enjoy the revival of this exceptional evening, a fantasy of the Queen dreaming herself as a shepherdess, with singers and musicians led by Sébastien d’Hérin, in the original sets. A Bonus DVD of the complete performance accompanies this recording.

Cast:
- Colette: Caroline Mutel (soprano)
- Colin: Sébastien Droy (tenor)
- The Soothsayer: Frédéric Caton (bass-baritone)

Reviews

It might seem perverse for Rousseau to have composed an opera in French, given his forcefully held opinion that the French language was not suitable for opera. But Le devin du village is more like an intermezzo, in the vein of Pergolesi's La serva padrona (1733): with one exception the recitatives are secco, and the arias are simple, even artless. ... The production by Jean-Jacques Schaettel, filmed by Olivier Simonnet, is straightforward. The 18th-century sets include a wooded landscape, an interior, and descending clouds. ... The singers are hardly taxed by the music but they sing mellifluously and act with conviction; the 12-strong band under Sebastien d'Herin is grace itself.  Richard Lawrence
