About

John Turner and the Manchester Chamber Ensemble perform a widely varied selection of repertoire for recorder and string quartet from the beginning of the twenty-first century, written by composers Patric Standford, Robert Crawford and Mervyn Burtch, amongst others.

All the music on this disc has a nostalgic quality, often a fond recollection, filtered through modern sensibilities, of music of a past era - renaissance dance music, medieval song, the baroque, the golden age of Hollywood, and English folk music. Other works on the album refer to close friendships and memories of favourite places - country walks and busy towns and cities.

“The recorder can seldom have been so lavishly celebrated as by these discs...There are substantial quintets and charming short pieces...Turner's brilliance of tone and phrasing is everywhere evident.” - The Sunday Times
