About

This recording features French music for flute and clarinet - either a capella or with piano or harpsichord - composed in Conservatory circles between 1921 and 1974. Each of the composers represented here - Charles Koechlin, Jean Cartan, Eugène Bozza, Jean Rivier and Florent Schmitt - worked in the margins of the dominant style of the day, developing their own original musical language, or even going against the current. The language of these composers is alternately tonal, modal or chromatic, but always has the charm and elegance for which French music is justly celebrated.

Particularly interested in the music of his time, clarinettist Jean-Guy Boisvert has commissioned and performed numerous Canadian works. His enthusiasm for new music has led him to expand the clarinet repertoire through commissions from Canadian composers and premieres of more than sixty works.

Christiane Laflamme received a Diplôme Supérieur de Concertiste from l’École Normale de Musique de Paris in the class of Christian Lardé, as well as a Masters in Flute Performance from the Université de Montréal and an Artist Diploma in Baroque flute from McGill University. She performs with equal pleasure on modern and baroque flutes.

Jean-Willy Kunz studied organ and harpsichord with Mireille Lagacé at the Conservatoire de Montréal and completed in 2011 his doctoral studies in organ performance at McGill University with John Grew. He was named the MSO’s first resident organist in March 2013 - his mandate to make known the Grand Orgue Pierre Béique at the Maison symphonique de Montréal.
