About

The CD 'Sacer nidus' carries us away to Poland, to Gniezno, the “holy nest.” In the year 1000, Gniezno was the meeting place of Duke Boleslaw I and Emperor Otto III, whose lives were closely connected with that of Saint Adalbert. The former bishop Adalbert had been sent by both rulers to spread the word of God among the pagans, died a short time afterwards as a martyr, and was elevated to sainthood in Rome. His story and the associated political-religious consequences are reflected in numerous texts and in the music of the Middle Ages.

The clear, pure singing of Ensemble Peregrina takes us into the world of the songs, sequences and hymns that were written not only in Poland, but also on Reichenau Island and in the Rhineland.

Many of these songs are accompanied by Romanesque harp and vielle, which can also be heard in the remaining instrumental improvisations. Ensemble Peregrina researches and performs sacred and secular music from the twelfth to fourteenth century Europe.

These works were recorded in St Wojciech’s Church in the heart of Poznan in Poland.
