About

Robert Casadesus (1899-1972) was a highly distinguished French pianist along with Alfred Cortot, though both were opposites from a musical point of view. Casadesus, like his mentor Ravel, was a classical pianist, believing in absolute fidelity to the score allied to a formal clarity imbued with a subtle elegance.

Artur Rubinstein described Casadesus as a "first rater" along with Lipatti, Gieseking, Michelangeli and himself of course. He was the first pianist to play and record the complete piano music of Ravel. He was greatly admired by Toscanini who partnered him in performances of Brahms Piano Concerto No.2 and Saint-Saëns Piano Concerto No.4. Casadesus played almost 3,000 concerts over a 55 year career and made numerous recordings for Sony.

These WDR recordings of the Mozart Concerto K491 and Concerto K595 are live and accompanied by the great conductor George Szell dating from 1960 and 1958 respectively. Both were recorded commercially by Sony in the studio in 1961 and 1962 but as Bryce Morrison in his note points out, "But here, without the chilling need for re-takes and corrections, his playing is of truly miraculous poise and refinement.”

Weber's Konzertstuck also comes live from WDR and is a very rare and brilliantly played addition to the Casadesus discography, conducted by Romanus Hubertus.

These recordings have never been released before and have been taken from the Original WDR Master Tapes.
