About

Among Haydn's greatest achievements was undoubtedly the ‘invention’ of the string quartet. In Italy, France and Germany during the first half of the 18th Century, four-part instrumental music became more and more important.

For these recordings, the Casal Quartet were supplied with a complete set of unique instruments by the Austrian violin-maker Jacob Stainer from around 1650. The sound of these instruments was considered as absolutely ideal until the early 19th century.
