About

Haydn's last twelve Symphonies were written for the impresario Johann Peter Salomon. Although born in Bonn Salomon moved to London in the early 1780s, where he worked as a composer and violinist. He is best remembered today as an organiser of concerts. He brought Joseph Haydn to London in 1791-92 and 1794-95 where Haydn wrote these, his London Symphonies.

Tate's recordings of the London Symphonies were very well received when they were first released. Edward Greenfield in Gramophone wrote: "Tate here shows ... how winning a relaxed approach to these masterpieces can be. It keeps making you think what a delightful old man Haydn must have been.
