About

Georg Philip Telemann’sMatthew Passion” of 1754, also known as the “Danzig Passion”, is given its world premiere recording. The work was re-discovered in 1980, and the performing version recorded on this disc was put together by the eminent conductor and musicologist Pál Németh.

The Matthew Passion is an extremely significant work, with a unique formal structure in that there are no arias but instead the work includes 34 hymns which perform a similar function. The text is taken from Matthew, chapters 26 and 27. It is altogether a very dramatic piece, constructed quite differently from Telemann's or even Bach's other passions. Furthermore, it is remarkable that the work is not just the only Matthew Passion from Danzig that is known, but it is also in Telemann‘s handwriting.
