About

Nineteenth century contemporaries ranked Niels Wilhelm Gade with Mendelssohn, but it is only recently that this Danish composer’s music has once again returned to the concert halls.

Gade was strongly influenced by the time that he spent in Leipzig, from 1843. It was here that he made contact with the circle around Mendelssohn and Schumann, his first symphony was premiered, and he had the opportunity to conduct the Gewandhaus Orchestra. He set out on European travels from Leipzig and first returned to his native Copenhagen in 1848. On his return to Copenhagen he invigorated the local music society and founded a conservatory, serving as its director until the end of his life.

Only a Scherzo is left to document the first chamber composition of the nineteen-year-old violinist Gade, who actually wanted to write a piano quartet. Three years later, Gade first tried his hand at a Trio, but did not get beyond the first very fine movement.

He finally achieved his breakthrough in 1853, after his return from Leipzig. He composed five movements for a piano trio and termed them – in the best Schumannian tradition – “Noveletten”. It is interesting how the Trio Parnassus illuminates the course of this work’s composition in its recording of the originally intended concluding movement.

It was with his only genuine piano trio that Niels Wilhelm Gade wrote what was also his most masterful composition. The Trio in F major has four movements, with the scherzo in the second position. The orchestral finale radiating in the brightest of colours offers the three musicians an optimal opportunity for displaying the top quality that has earned them a long list of prizes.
