About

Here are Frankie Laine’s 55 greatest recorded performances from 1946 to 1958, including no fewer than 20 Million-Sellers. This finest available two-disc survey of his golden years contains an amazing 40 chart hits!

Francis LoVecchio, otherwise “Frankie Laine” (1913-2007), like so many 40s and 50s crooners of Italian parentage, was in every way a big star. With cumulative sales of over 100 million discs, he was the most successful of the big-voiced balladeers of the time (one reviewer said he had “steel tonsils”). His speciality was lusty, muscular country-flavoured songs, yet he was also a first-class jazz and blues singer, and a sensitive performer of romantic love songs.

'That’s My Desire' is a superb demonstration of Laine’s ability in each of these roles. The caressingly performed title-track of 1946 was Laine’s first huge hit and spearheads an altogether remarkable collection of his greatest performances over the following 12 years.

Naturally, all the major hits are here – in all, 15 reached No.1, No.2 or No.3 – 'I Believe', 'High Noon', 'Rawhide', 'Moonlight Gambler', 'Jezebel', 'Mule Train' (with its snapping bullwhip) and so many more.

His highly successful record partnership with Jo Stafford is marked by four great duets, as well as other pairings with Doris Day (Sugarbush), Johnnie Ray and The Four Lads.

He also shines in jazz-orientated numbers from the late 40s and, especially, two terrific 1955 tracks with trumpeter Buck Clayton.

But it’s the Mitch Miller-inspired ‘Laine sound’ of the big baritone, big country numbers with which he is best remembered, and which That’s My Desire will leave ringing in your ears.
