About

No instrument but the cello is as capable of evoking refined melancholy, devotion, the unbearable lightness of a gallant minuet, deep sorrow or sheer joy with the finest nuances of feelings. That is why Antonio Vivaldi was attracted to this instrument for which he wrote some of his most beautiful music, full of energy and contemplation, and characterized by delightful melodies.

In 1997, Roel Dieltiens gathered together a group of internationally respected musicians with whom he worked on a scrupulous, in-depth and fresh interpretation of lesser-known 19th-century repertoires: Ensemble Explorations. One of the ensemble’s motivational forces has been to elude a musical approach determined by force of habit. In order to achieve their goal, the ensemble has sought to (re)discover and systematically investigate score materials, composers and style periods. Within this philosophy, the use of period instruments has always been an obvious and natural choice. In the past decade, the ensemble has managed to restore important composers to their authentic environment, devoid of all dreary conventions.

Cellist Roel Dieltiens received his education in Antwerp and Detmold. He promptly achieved international appreciation and nowadays is considered to be one of the main authorities both on modern and on Baroque cello. His strong personality, combined with his overwhelming musicianship and his unconventional approach, have brought him from the outset of his career to perform in the most important concert venues worldwide (Paris, Berlin, London, New York, Moscow, Tokyo). Roel Dieltiens teaches cello at the Hochschule der Künste in Zürich and he is often invited to be a judge in such international competitions as the Leipzig Bach Wettbewerb and the Moscow Tchaikovsky Competition.
