About

The pianist, composer and conductor Fritz Brun, who was born in Lucerne on 18 August 1878, had his first piano lessons with Julie Kopp when he was only eight years of age, before being educated in musical theory by Franz Josef Breitenbach, as well as in playing the piano by Willem Mengelberg and Peter Fassbaender between 1892 and 1895.

In 1897 Brun took up studies at the Conservatorium in Cologne and afterwards moved to Berlin, where he acted as a music teacher for Prince George of Prussia and became acquainted with the two composers Ferruccio Busoni and Arthur Nikisch.

Following short stays in London and Dortmund, he worked as a piano teacher at the music school in Berne from 1903 onwards. At this time he performed frequently as a pianist at the symphony concerts. In 1909, Brun was appointed as the successor of the Bernese music director Karl Munzinger, thus not only taking over the conductorship of the Berner Musikgesellschaft, but also that of the two choirs, the Berner Cäcilienverein and the Berner Liedertafel.

During the following three decades, Brun shaped musical life in the Swiss federal capital significantly. As a conductor he particularly dedicated himself to the symphonic works of Beethoven, Bruckner, Brahms and Berlioz. In 1941 Brun retired from all public duties with the performance of all the Beethoven symphonies, in order to dedicate himself from then on entirely to compositional work in Morcote (Tessin). Brun died in Grosshöchstetten in the Canton of Berne on 29 November 1959.
