Schönberg wrote an article in 1947 entitled “Brahms, the Progressive” and commented “with his classicism and academic style, Brahms was a great innovator in terms of musical language”. It is not surprising that Schönberg agreed to arrange the Piano Quartet Op.25 by Brahms for full symphony orchestra.
Luciano Berio’s arrangement of the Sonata for Clarinet and Piano Op. 120/1 has more of the effect of an instrumental chamber concerto.
