About

Brahms great choral work performed by the legendary Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus conducted by Robert Spano

This cornerstone of the choral repertoire was recorded 24 years ago, almost to the day, by Telarc with the great Robert Shaw leading the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. So why make another recording?  Simply put, new recording technology, along with the great skill and mastery of Robert Spano, prompted Telarc to revisit this masterwork and add a new interpretation and performance to their existing catalogue of great choral works.

Johannes Brahms wrote Ein deutsches Requiem (A German Requiem), Op. 45, following the deaths of his mother and Robert Schumann, his mentor. Although Brahms based his Requiem on scriptural passages, beginning and ending the work with a blessing Blessed are they who mourn, for they shall be comforted (Matthew 5:4), he didnt write it as a religious piece concerning itself with the souls of the departed, but as a cantata whose message is of comfort, acceptance, peace, and serenity for those left behind.

Soprano Twyla Robinson has earned consistent praise for her musicality, dramatic sensibility and vocal beauty. In recent seasons she has debuted with many of the worlds leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, Berlin Staatskapelle, The Cleveland Orchestra and Los Angeles Philharmonic. Poland-born Baritone Mariusz Kwiecien, recognized as one of todays leading baritones and known for his robust voice and wide-ranging expressiveness, performs with the foremost opera companies and symphony orchestras in Europe, North America and Asia. He opened the 2007-08 Metropolitan Opera season with performances of Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor and can be heard across North America in recital this season with performances from New York to Berkeley.
