British-born Australian pianist, Trevor Barnard, began piano lessons at the age of four and, while still very young, studied at the Royal Academy of Music, London. This was followed by several years of private tuition with Herbert Fryer, a student of Ferruccio Busoni. At the age of sixteen he was awarded the ARCM Diploma in Piano, and later won a full scholarship to the Royal College of Music, London. Subsequently, he undertook intensive masterclass study with Harold Craxton.

Between 1967 and 1972 Trevor Barnard lived in the USA, where he was a faculty member of the New England Conservatory in Boston (1968-1972) and Pianist-in-Residence to Boston University Radio (1967-1971), when he recorded the complete cycles of Beethoven and Mozart Piano Sonatas, plus other major works in the piano repertoire. In addition to many concert appearances he gave several half-hour recitals for TV in Boston and New York City. In moving to Melbourne in 1972 he became piano tutor at Monash University. From 1974 to 1988 he taught full-time consecutively at the Melbourne State College and the Melbourne College of Advanced Education, and from 1989 at The University of Melbourne until his retirement at the end of 2003.

In the mid-1970s, the World Record Club released Trevor Barnard’s solo album titled 'An Introduction to Piano Music'. The LP included 12 composers that ranged from J.S. Bach to the contemporary Australian composer, Peter Sculthorpe. This CD includes all the works from that WRC album plus an extra six composers, Grieg and five more Australians. This was intentional on Trevor’s part because he wanted to not only pay tribute to the rich musical culture that Australia reflects but also, on a personal note, to show a sense of gratitude to a country that has provided him with many professional opportunities during the second half of his lifetime.
