Music is not an art that Courbet practised or which directly influenced his painting. Other artists such as the painter Maurice Denis or the poet Stéphane Mallarmé had a much more direct relationship with music. Many of their works are musical in inspiration, or were themselves transposed into musical terms. A Woman’s Life and Loves by Maurice Denis makes direct reference to Schumann’s song-cycle Frauenliebe und -leben, while Debussy’s Prélude à l’Après-midi d’un faune bears the name of Mallarmé’s poem. In Courbet, this direct reference is replaced by an indirect reference which is nevertheless perceptible throughout his career.

His output displays an astonishing range of subjects, styles, and formats. It conveys a well-nigh revolutionary creative force which may well recall that of the great watersheds marked by the creations of Beethoven, Berlioz, and Wagner. This ability to set one’s face against tradition, indeed to break with it, is symptomatic of genius only if it points the way to a new path of lasting value. It is a powerful gift that Courbet shares with Beethoven, Berlioz and Wagner, who, along with other composers, will accompany this musical journey through his painting.
