About

John Goss was a fine singer of the 1920s and 1930s, now almost forgotten, but a great friend of Moeran and Warlock. He was one of the first performers ever to encompass all styles from folksong to lieder in his recitals. He was a tremendous ‘bon vivant’ and was one of the most influential singers in the years between the wars. He championed the works of British composers and cut a number of recordings for EMI.

This collection is taken from material that Goss regularly performed and in many cases – particularly with some of the Warlock songs - was the original dedicatee. The CD booklet contains extensive notes - together with lyrics of the lieder with translations where appropriate.

The soloist paying tribute to Goss is baritone Giles Davis. He studied at the Purcell School and has performed with conductors Richard Hickox and Trevor Pinnock, to name just two. As an accomplished actor, his roles have included an onscreen appearance as John Goss in Anthony Britten’s film about Warlock.

Giles is joined on this recording by pianist Steven Devine and the Goss Male Quartet.
