About

It is unlikely that Schreker, Bürger, or Krenek would have wanted to be remembered for such early works but each of these well crafted and richly expressive pieces stands very ably on its own, quite part from any consideration of its composer’s subsequent evolution. These are starting points, to be sure, but they are also powerful testimony to the vitality and diversity of a school of composition that constitutes one of the central strands of twentieth-century music history.

Dietrich Henschel's international career started with the title roles in two opera productions: Henze’s “Prinz von Homburg” at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and Busoni’s “Dr.Faust” at the Opéra National de Lyon. He now regularly appears at the opera houses in Berlin, Munich, Amsterdam, Brussels, Lisbon, Madrid, Geneva, Zurich and Paris, and also at international festivals like Salzburg, Aix-en-Provence and Florence. Henschel is specially devoted to concert and lied, and gives recitals all over Europe and the US, accompanied by Irwin Gage, Fritz Schwinghammer, Helmut Deutsch and Shinya Okahara. His wide discography includes, amongst many others, the complete recording of Busoni’s “Dr.Faust”, which received a Grammy Award in 2000.
