About

Premier recordings of compositions played on the rare and extremely beautiful Ophicleide, a brass instrument invented in 1821 by the French maker Halary as a lower-pitched extension of the keyed Bugle family and used by composers for its unique sound, including Berlioz (Symphonie Fantastique), Mendelssohn (A Midsummer Night’s Dream) and Wagner (Rienzi).

This CD contains a diverse selection of bel canto repertoire, with favourites including the Rachmaninov Vocalise and Astor Piazzolla's Oblivion.

Nick Byrne
is a world authority on the Ophicleide in scholarship and performance, and has commissioned new works for the instrument such as Simon Proctor’s Concerto.

Presented in a digipak with picture disc and a 32-page colour booklet with historical essay and photos.
