About

The Treasure of the Sierra Madre’, directed by John Huston and starring Humphrey Bogart, is one of Max Steiner’s best remembered scores, and gathered recognition by winning The Venice World Award in 1948. Although the film was a critical success, it did not have the box office appeal Warners had hoped for, however, its reputation has grown over the years and it is now considered one of the true classic American films.

There have been previous suites recorded from this score, which amounted to highlights of the main thematic material. This however is a substantially complete recording - a couple of cues that ran only for a few seconds have been eliminated and also some of the repetitious sections in the last third of the film.

"Warner Bros gave Steiner and his talented orchestrator, Murray Cutter, complete licence in the score to John Huston's 1948 classic, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, which charts the psychological journey of three gold-diggers (Humphrey Bogart, Walter Huston, Tim Holt). The spine-tingling result - stunningly executed here by Stromberg and the MSO - is a colouristic journey through Mexico, complete with accordions, mandolins and Mexican drums.” The Observer on the original Marco Polo release
