About

Frescobaldi’s Fantasie were published in 1608. The twelve pieces were not written for a specific instrument and Liuwe Tamminga’s choice to perform these works on the two magnificent 15th and 16th century mean-tone organs of San Petronio, Bologna, certainly highlights all the qualities of these compositions.

According to conventions of the day, a Fantasia is a piece that uses one or more subjects which the composer freely varies and changes, unhampered by text or any other constraint. In his five Canzoni, published in 1615, Frescobaldi combines his use of a fairly conservative and strict contrapuntal idiom with a great freedom in the way he varies metrical organisation and rhythmic patterns in transforming the initial thematic materials.
