About

Personal suffering and the longing for the all-encompassing, and lost, happiness plays a key role in the works of Mahler. This is evident in his lied “Urlicht”, which takes up the idea of all encompassing love that is only possible after death.

The five later love poems brought together under the title Ruckert Lieder and Das Knaben Wunderhorn share similar qualities. These lieder provide a micro-cosmos of Mahler’s work, which illuminates and differentiates the so very different texts.

These works are complemented by Wagner’s Wesendonck Lieder- his most personal works.
