About

On this disc, nine pianists play Chopin. During the first quarter of the 20th century these pianists entrusted their interpretations to music rolls, and now their performances can be heard again on a restored Bösendorfer grand piano with an Ampico automatic action.

After the success of Volume 1 of Conlon Nancarrow’s “works for player piano” (MDG 645 1401), Volume 2 of MDG’s Player Piano series is another fascinating survey of these recordings long thought to be lost. From more than 100 Chopin recordings, player-piano specialist Jürgen Hocker has chosen a fascinating selection of pianists - Moriz Rosenthal, Mischa Levitzki, Alfred Mirovitch, Mieczyslaw Münz, Leo Ornstein, Eugene d’Albert, Alfred Reisenauer, Ferruccio Busoni and Leo Godowsky.
