About

Dukas, best known for The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, only wrote one opera Ariane et Barbe-Bleu. Described as ‘terminally self-critical’, few of his works survive. In common with Debussy's 'Pelléas et Melisande' and Bartok’s better known ‘Bluebeard’s Castle’ the mysterious libretto is by the symbolist Maurice Maeterlinck. The soundworld combines post-Wagnerian harmony with post-C19th Russian sumptuous sound and rich orchestration.

Ariane, the heroine, overcomes the psychological terror of Bluebeard’s regime by daring to unlock the seventh bridal chamber and frees his other brides, telling them to wear the jewels stored behind the doors with what the liner notes decribe as ‘a potent whiff of Sapphic eroticism’. The title role is extremely daunting, but was sung and championed by Grace Bumbry. The American premiere was with no less a team than soprano Geraldine Farrar with Toscanini conducting.

Leon Botstein has established a reputation for exploring the exotic and neglected rare operatic jewels of the French repertoire.  In 2005 he recorded Chausson’s Le Roi Arthus for Telarc with the BBC SO, which was selected as a Gramophone ‘Editor’s Choice’.
