When Beethoven first started to compose string quartets, he found the genre quite a challenge. Having started to explore the medium relatively late, when he was 28, it was only after decades of persistence that Beethoven finally felt he had perfected the medium.

Today, the Quartets Op. 59 are among the works which best epitomize Beethoven's middle period, representing what some would say the most perfect balance between both content and form and expression and invention in all chamber music. They each possess an inexplicable and unique magic; it is as though the string quartet form were newly conceived in each of them.

Whole books could be written on the compositional particularities of these quartets; they mark the point at which Beethoven, refusing to bow to convention, replaced all predetermined models of the genre with his own custom solutions.
