About

Maria de Buenos Aires is…. a powerful illusion given substance and pathos by the approachable surrealism of the opera’s librettist, Horacio Ferrer. Piazzolla’s music harbours a Weill-like sense of foreboding; minor-key heartache invades almost everywhere, even when the dancing starts, the air thickens and the drink starts to flow.” Gramophone

The Argentinian bandoneon-player and composer Astor Piazzolla, by his creation of the ‘new tango’, brought the popular dance form into the concert hall.

His own experience as a performer was further developed by study as a composer with Nadia Boulanger and Ginastera, allowing him to create a new synthesis, exemplified in compositions that include the operatic María de Buenos Aires, in collaboration with Horacio Ferrer.

Sung and spoken texts by Horacio Ferrer in Chiquilín de Bachín, Balada para un Loco and María de Buenos Aires – Suite.
