About

Dietrich Buxtehude was born in 1637, and after extensive training in the organ by his father, held the important post of organist at St. Mary’s Church in Lübeck beginning in 1668. Bach, Handel, and many others made the pilgrimage to him; he was a towering figure in the music of his times.

Buxtehude’s vocal music (extant only in very reduced form) shows him as a fervent and tender pietist. Manfred Cordes has trimmed the grand cantata Wacht! Euch zum Streit (which may have been performed in the Lübeck evening concerts) to CD length, thus bringing its dramatic elements more strongly into the foreground.

A wonderful homage to Buxtehude.
