About

A new approach to Orfeo. Sergio Vartolo has researched this period in depth and is convinced that certain forms ornamentation were used much earlier than generally believed, i.e. they must have been applied in the early performances of Orfeo. So they have also been incorporated in this recorded performance

In 1607 Monteverdi’s Orfeo more or less established an entirely new genre: opera. Although it has some predecessors this opera truly marked the beginning of new combination of text, music and stage performance. In this opera finally Orfeo really sings.

This recently recorded production of Orfeo is part of a trilogy of three operas by Monteverdi. The same performers have also recorded Il coronazione di Poppea and Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria directed by Sergio Vartolo.

Like several more or less contemporary works the ideal subject of this opera is the mythical singer/poet Orpheus capable of enchanting man, beast and god alike with his music.

The ensemble plays on period instruments and is led from the harpsichord by Sergio Vartolo. William Matteuzzi sings the part of Orfeo, soprano Sylva Pozzer is Euridice.

With very extensive background information in the booklet.
