About

Terry Riley’s masterpiece In C. - the work with which American minimalism signed its name in the history book of music. From Copenhagen comes this version recorded for the first time by voices and mallet instruments. The music is best heard continuously rights through from the beginning, but for ease of access track IDs have been added at 10 minute intervals.

One of the most significant aspects of Terry Riley’s musical life has been his association with Indian classical music. In 1970, Terry Riley became a disciple of the revered North Indian Raga Vocalist, Pandit Pran Nath and made the first of his numerous trips to India to study with the Master. He appeared frequently in concert with the legendary singer as tampura, tabla and vocal accompanist over the next 26 years until Pran Nath’s death in 1996.

The idea of the work In C. is that music is about the relationships between people as well as the relationships between sounds. This seminal work provided a new concept in musical form based on interlocking repetitive patterns. It is an organic work, where every performer plays a central part in the immediate creation and mediation of the work. The work's impact was to change the course of twentieth-century music and its influence has been heard in the compositions of prominent composers such as Steve Reich, Philip Glass, John Adams and many others.

This CD recording features the outstanding Danish vocal ensemble Ars Nova Copenhagen, who performs with the Danish Percussion Ensemble Percurama under the direction of conductor Paul Hillier.
