About

Peder Gram enjoyed a prominent position in his time, not only because of the fine craftsmanship and artistic standard of his musical works, but also because of the many organizational duties in the musical world that made him one of his generation’s most influential Danish musical personalities. This release features some of Peder Gram’s most exciting orchestral works, covering the full spectrum of large-scale expression; from the sparkling and effectful to the highly dramatic and illustrative, festive and powerful.

Peder Gram’s reputation as a composer has been relatively consistent. He has among other things been called a “cool Nordic mentality” and a “union of intellect and formal clarity with a fine sense of the lyrical”. In his music Peder Gram demonstrated pronounced intellectually-oriented abilities. Everything is done precisely and appropriately and the clear arrangement and thorough elaboration are typical of Gram’s works.

The orchestral works on this CD were composed between 1911 and 1928 and are from the years of the composer’s maturity. The pieces are, each in their own, way based on a fine contrast between darkness and light – absorption and lightheartedness – which is supported by the highly elaborated harmony and richly sonorous instrumentation. All this gives the works a certain psychological feel, which relates them to the culture of the romantic tradition, but also gives them a unique modern, ‘cool’ sound.
