About

Whilst still a child, Yuri Ahronovitch took an active part in the defence of the city of Leningrad. In 1943, he received a Military Medal for the Defence of Leningrad; a rarity for a young boy of 11 years of age.

The first time Ahronovitch heard Shostakovich's 7th (Leningrad) Symphony was in Leningrad, during the siege itself. It made an enormous impression on him. Years later, when he was working in collaboration with the composer on performances of this symphony, he told Shostakovich of the impression this war-time performance made on him and the composer was so moved that each time they worked together, he would make the young conductor repeat his tale.

Yuri Ahronovitch quotes: “This symphony is not merely the celebration of victory over Fascism; equally it celebrates the victory of good over evil, of humanism over obscurantism, of life over death”.

Live recording from 1993.
