About

Many of William Shakespeare's works have kindled the creative fires of opera librettists. Romeo and Juliet naturally tops the list, but his early comedy The Taming of the Shrew, performed for the first time in 1594, has also inspired composers.

As 'Der Widerspenstigen Zähmung', the story of the wayward Katharina and how she is brought to heel by Petruccio had been known in Germany since August Wilhelm Schlegel's exemplary translations of Shakespeare in the early nineteenth century. Indeed, the first person to exploit it for the opera stage was the German composer Hermann Gustav Goetz.

This is the first ever official complete recording of The Taming of the Shrew. The Bavarian Radio Orchestra live mono recording of 1955 from which this CD has been produced is good quality, and has naturally undergone a complex process of digital restoration.

Just a glance at the list of performers assured us that the technical effort would be worthwhile. The fact that Joseph Keilberth, who knew all the tricks of the trade and won great acclaim as a Mozart and Wagner conductor, had turned his attention to the score almost necessarily ensured that its charm would unfold.
