About

Kismet, with music adapted from the original Borodin by Robert Wright and George Forrest is an opulent musical set in Baghdad at the time of the Arabian Nights.

Kismet was premiered by the Los Angeles-San Francisco Light Opera Company on August 17, 1953, in an opulent production by Edwin Lester which moved to Broadway on December 3 of that year, opening at the Ziegfeld Theater with the commanding Alfred Drake as Hajj, Doretta Morrow as Marsinah, and Richard Kiley as the Caliph.

Though a newspaper strike delayed the news, Kismet was a resounding success, playing for 583 performances, and taking a Tony in 1954 for Outstanding Musical, before moving on to London for an even more successful run.

Original Cast Recording 1953.
