About

The Naxos CD of the Month for June 2007 presents in Howell’s Hymnus Paradisi arguably the composer’s most important work and one of the finest masterpieces of the 20th century.
Hymnus Paradisi was the composer's response to the tragic loss of his son Michael to spinal meningitis when he was 9 years old. Years after his son's death, his daughter persuaded Howells to write a piece in his memory as a catharsis for his grief. The resulting work shows an intensity, optimism and tenderness, with a biblical text which includes Psalm 23 and some movements from the Requiem Mass.
The world premiere recording of Sir Patrick Spens provides the coupling, a Scottish ballad for huge forces – very large orchestra, choir and baritone soloist. It was written around 1922 when the composer was around 30 years of age.
The writing is very dramatic, written before Howells became anchored in his distinctive ‘Anglican’ style. It shows a very different side to composer's output, with very melodious almost folk-like tunes. It shows strong influences of Stanford in his use of folk-songs.
