About

Without doubt the finest lute player in the world today.” San Francisco Chronicle

Since the mid-1980s, Hopkinson Smith has focused almost exclusively on the solo repertoires for early plucked instruments, producing a long series of prize-winning recordings for Astrée. These featured Spanish music for vihuela and Baroque guitar, French lute music of the Renaissance and Baroque, early seventeenth-century Italian music, and the German High Baroque. This new portrait , following on from his 60th birthday celebrations in 2006, showcases his dazzling talent in a wide range of lute repertoire.

The recording of Smith’s lute arrangements of the Bach Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin, E8678, has been universally acclaimed in the press. Gramophone called it “the best recording of these works on any instrument.” More recently, a recording on Renaissance lute of pieces published by Pierre Attaingnant was awarded a Diapason d’Or, and his Dowland album was described as “wonderfully personalised” by the New York Times.
