About

Volume 3 of our highly acclaimed SACD edition featuring complete recordings from the Northern German organ baroque as performed by Friedhelm Flamme on instruments as authentic as possible presents the surviving works of three composers who enjoyed high esteem during the second half of the seventeenth century.

Johann Adam Reincken is certainly the best-known of the three, and together with his Lübeck colleague and friend Dietrich Buxtehude he was regarded as an absolute authority in the field of organ performance and design. Organists came to him from far and wide, and they included the young Johann Sebastian Bach, who visited him in Hamburg in 1720 and improvised a fantasia on “An den Wasserflüssen Babylons” for him. The same chorale formed the basis of Reincken’s most extensive composition; the fifteen-year-old Bach copied it out in his own hand, and it forms the high point on our recording.

Andreas Kneller, Reincken’s son-in-law and the nephew of the famous Matthias Weckmann, is the second composer on our SACD, and the third member of our organ trio is Christian Geist, who was active in Copenhagen.

Johann-Matthias-Hagelstein-Organ, Kirche St. Geaorg, Gartow (1735-1740)
