About

This latest instalment in the Soler Sonatas for Harpsichord series again showcases the talents of Gilbert Rowland, so greatly praised in Gramophone for his earlier volumes in the series (Naxos 8555031): “[Rowland] clearly has a command of their very particular Spanish idiom, which presupposes a formidable command of style, considerable virtuosity and a keen sense of humour…. Bravo!”

The Catalan composer Antonio Soler spent much of his life as a monk at the 16th-century Spanish monastery of El Escorial. In addition to his monastic duties he was expected to train the choir, provide choral music for services and supply the Royal family with secular and instrumental music during their frequent visits. Although much of his day was taken up with prayer and the routine of the community, he found time to compose 150 varied and colourful keyboard sonatas, mostly written for the harpsichord.

The present volume includes two sonatas in three movements and one in two movements, while the other sonatas are in single-movement form, structurally similar to the single movement sonatas of Domenico Scarlatti, Soler’s possible teacher.

Reviews

The variety of Soler’s invention is remarkable. The outstanding Scottish keyboard player Gilbert Rowland has recorded this repertoire over a long period, beginning in the late 1990s and concluding in 2005, playing with great vitality and variety of characterization, bringing every sonata fully to life.
