About

Beautifully repackaged in a striking new slipcase, in this popular compilation disc we find a widespread selection of Medieval Christmas carols to create the perfect festive mood.

The carols are sung by the Oxford Camerata, formed by Jeremy Summerly in order to meet the growing demand for choral groups specializing in music from the Renaissance era.  Their previous Naxos release of Tallis’ Spem in Alium (8557770) won a four-star review from The Penguin Guide and was there labelled “one of the most remarkable recordings of 2005…. the performances here are beyond praise.”

In fifteenth-Century England a tradition for the composition of polyphonic carols evolved. None of these carols are ascribed to a specific composer or poet.  The form is that of alternating verses and refrains, the language generally being a mixture of Latin and English.  The majority of the carols have sacred texts and it is possible that these were designed for liturgical use.  Others were possibly used to enliven feasts and banquets in aristocratic households or for recreational purposes at educational establishments.
