About

Sassy performances of three great American classics. Rhapsody in Blue is drawn out slinkily; Barber’s indelible Adagio for Strings has never sounded more poignant; and in Appalachian Springthe compulsion of the music making is obvious” – Penguin Guide

awards for this recording:
1984 Grand Prix National du Disque

"it is a wonderfully compelling performance, one which will be loved immediately by those who like to hear performances of this piece 'over the top' in emotional warmth. The opening clarinet solo, taken very slowly, has an amazing range of coloration, though in principle it is a fault of the digital recording that odd solos stick out as they do—particularly bass clarinet and trumpet—and the slightly boxy recording of the strings has a Hollywood film score sound to it, those idiosyncrasies are part of the individuality.” - Gramophone
