About

The previous volumes in this series have achieved high levels of artistry, and have been recognized for their contribution to the classical world: “Weinberger brings clarity and sincerity to a programme of arrangements of varying quality and provenance”. Choir and Organ on CPO7770182.

Gerhard Weinberger has sought out two magnificent organs in Saxony for the programme of Volume 18 of his complete recordings of Bach’s organ works: the Zacharias Hildebrand organ in Störmthal, for which Bach, who also served as en expert organ examiner, composed the inaugural cantata Höchst erwünschtes Freudenfest BWV 194, and the Johann Scheibe organ in Zschortau, one of the few Scheibe instruments still extant today.

On these instruments Gerhard Weinberger interprets some of the organ works of ‘doubtful authenticity’ ascribed to Bach. For this reason, the organ works presented here are hardly ever recorded, or indeed considered in performance practice or research.
Contents:

Works of Doubtful Authenticity I:

- Fantasia in G BWV 571
- Orgelchoraele aus der Berliner Sammelhandschrift Mus.ms. Bach P 285
- Partita O Vater, allmaechtiger Gott BWV 758
- Orgelchoraele aus der Rudorff-Sammlung
- Kleines harmonisches Layrinth BWV 591
- Orgelchoraele aus unterschiedlicher Ueberlieferung
- Orgelchoraele aus der Sammelhandschrift Yale LM 4843
- Fuga in F BWV Anhang II 42

Zacharias Hildebrandt (Organ, Stoermthal (Sachsen), Kreuzkirche, 1722-23) (tracks 1-19); Johann Scheibe (Organ, Zschortau (Sachsen), S. Nicolai, 1744-46)
