About

Jerusalem has special significance for Penderecki, who first visited it in 1974, following the ‘Yom Kippur’ war. He was commissioned then to write a work for the third millennium celebration of the city of David.

He composed the oratorio Seven Gates of Jerusalem in 1996 (the Eighth Gate being reserved for the Messiah in Jewish tradition). It was premièred there the following year, with Lorin Maazel conducting. Following the work’s Polish première, the composer decided to call it his Seventh Symphony. The Seventh Symphony is pervaded by the number ‘seven’ at various levels. There are seven movements, a recurrence of seven-note phrases, and seven fortissimo chords bring the seventh movement to an end.

Led by Antoni Wit, who has been at the helm throughout the Naxos Penderecki series, this account is sure to become a benchmark: “Under the experienced Antoni Wit, the Warsaw forces give a clear, confident account, with the continuity of spoken and sung passages expertly managed, and a first-rate line-up of soloists.” BBC Music Magazine on Penderecki: St. Luke Passion (8557149)
